Cocoa shortage, rising prices threaten chocolate bars

The humble candy bar could soon change beyond recognition as palm oil, chemical flavorings and fillers replace increasingly scarce cocoa beans and expensive ingredients. And that means real chocolates will become a luxury item — for the wealthy only. “People are prepared to pay 70 pounds ($113) per kilogram (2.2 pounds) for chocolate” said Angus Kennedy, a former chocolate taster for major manufacturers. And he warned that if chocolatiers continue with “business as usual”, the world could find itself with a shortage of cocoa beans within seven years.
