Don’t Forget Smart Snacks For Your Summer Food Service Program (SFSP)
The 2014-15 school year kicked off with a requirement from the USDA that all foods sold at school during the school day must meet nutrition standards. The Smart Snacks in School regulation was applied to foods sold a la carte, in the school store, and vending machines. Prior to the publishing of the Smart Snacks rule, 39 States already had nutrition standards in place. A number of tools and resources have been made available to help schools identify food items that meet Smart Snacks criteria and to encourage children to make healthier snack choices that give them the nutrition they need to grow and learn.
As the weather is warm and the excitement of the school year comes to a conclusion, The Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) ensures that low-income children continue to receive nutritious meals and snacks when school is not in session. Free meals will be made available to children 18 years old and under. Persons over 18 years of age who are determined by a state or local public educational agency to be mentally or physically disabled and who also participate in a public or private nonprofit school program during the regular school year may receive free meals as well.
